The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is a public research university with various campuses in the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas and is the University of Texas System’s southernmost member. The Texas Legislature established the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) in 2013 following the merger of the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College and the University of Texas-Pan American.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley enrolled 29,619 students in the fall of 2019, making it the ninth-largest university in Texas and the fourth-largest (student enrollment) academic institution in The University of Texas system. In 2018, UTRGV was also one of the largest institutions in the United States with a majority Hispanic student population, with 89.2% of its students being Hispanic, almost all Mexican Americans. In 2020, it was designated as “R2: Doctoral Universities – High Research Activity.”
Furthermore, UTRGV is one level below the highest categorization of Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity (R1), often known as Carnegie Tier One. “This new classification is yet another illustration of how UTRGV’s profile and reputation are growing,” stated president Guy Bailey.
The UTRGV Tuition Advantage grant is a program meant to cover tuition and mandatory fees by first utilizing federal and state aid, such as the Federal Pell Grant and the Texas Grant, as well as scholarships and other gift aid. Tuition Advantage will cover any leftover tuition and obligatory fees not covered by these programs.
Beginning in the fall of 2022, the program will pay for tuition and obligatory fees for qualifying students with a family income of $100,000 or less and unmet financial needs. Tuition Advantage’s $100,000 income requirement is the highest of any free-tuition program in the state and, according to reports, the most in the country.
