Which Loan Retirement Programs Are Eligible For Government Loan Forgiveness?

The four income-based payment plans (IDRs) covered by the PSLF are:

  • Pay as much as you earn (PAYE)
  • Revised Pay As You Earn (REPAYE)
  • Income-Based Repayment (IBR)
  • Income Related Refund (ICR)

The standard 10-year repayment schedule is also technically eligible for government loan forgiveness.

However, with this repayment plan, the student loan will be paid off in full in ten years and there will be no credit allowed.

Therefore, you must be enrolled in one of our income-based plans to receive PSLF benefits.

If you have other non-direct federal student loans, you must consolidate them into your direct consolidation loan.

Any pre-consolidation payments made under the regular eligible loan rules will no longer count towards the PSLF’s 120 loan payments.

We recommend that you keep any credits covered under this Credit Waiver Program separate from other credits.

Another significant feature of government loan forgiveness is that the forgiven loan amount is not considered income by the Internal Revenue Service. This means that it is not taxed.

Limited PSLF Waiver Program

President Biden’s PSLF waiver program exempts most of these common requirements. Non-direct lending borrowers should be consolidated.

A borrower with federal student loans of any kind must add all experience of community and government employment to her PSLF-ECF form at studentaid.gov.

To apply, submit her PSLF application for forgiveness. Submit the Government Service Loan Forgiveness Employment Certificate form annually if you are eligible for this loan forgiveness program.

Also, each time you change employers, you must submit a new certificate.

Student Loan Refinancing

One way to reduce your student loan payments and pay off your student loan debt quickly is to refinance your student loan.

However, remember that government student loans become private student loans after refinancing.

For example, some hedges will not be available after refinancing. Lost federal protections include:

  • loan deferral
  • loan grace
  • Eligibility to participate in the IDR program

When refinancing, repayment terms and interest rates are highly dependent on your credit score, current salary, and debt-to-income ratio.

Depending on your credit rating, you may need a cosigner with good credit to qualify for a student loan refinance.

However, if you want a co-signer, choose someone with whom you have a close relationship, such as a parent or sibling.

If you default on your student loans, the co-signer will be financially responsible for the unpaid amount. So make sure you can pay the full amount on time.
