Jerry DeGregorio Coaching Career
DeGregorio began his coaching career at Hofstra University as an assistant coach in 1985. DeGregorio joined St. Thomas Aquinas College as an assistant coach in 1988. DeGregorio became an assistant coach for Mattatuck Community College in 1990 and then the college’s head coach in 1991–92 after taking a year off to attend a Hofstra University graduate program. DeGregorio served as the head boys’ basketball coach and athletic director at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in New Britain, Connecticut, from 1993 to 1997. Future NBA star Lamar Odom attended Aquinas, despite never playing a game for the Saints. DeGregorio was rumored to have recruited Odom not to play basketball, but rather to ensure that he gets high school graduation.
In 1997, he moved to Rhode Island as Jim Harrick’s senior coach, shortly after Lamar Odom transferred from UNLV. Following Harrick’s sudden departure for Georgia following the 1998-99 season, DeGregorio was named head coach. Odom, on the other hand, announced his entry for the 1999 NBA Draft just days later. Four potential recruits dropped URI from their lists in quick succession, another was declared ineligible, and a critical reserve was lost to academics. DeGregorio’s first squad battled to a 5-25 record, the worst in school history, with a depleted roster.
DeGregorio’s second season was only somewhat better, finishing 7-23, but he resigned after the season. DeGregorio was hired as an assistant coach and director of player development by the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers in 2001. Jerry DeGregorio held that post until 2003 when he went freelance as a talent development coach for a number of NBA stars. He was appointed as an assistant coach by the NBA Development League’s Fayetteville Patriots in 2004. In 2011, he was hired as an assistant coach by the Golden State Warriors. He became the Director of Quality Control for the Clemson Tigers women’s basketball team in 2018.
